My friend Darin recently bought a Mac, and he is raving about it. You may remember that when I made the switch, I was also all aglow (and still am). People accuse me of being a Mac Evangelist, and I take the title with pride. I love my Mac, and if the entire world ran on Mac, I think there would be a lot less stress in the world. [Obviously hyperbole]

On my drive to drop off Ariel this morning, I started thinking about why I like the Apple products so much. I think it can be reduced to a straightforward thought. It is something my father used to constantly say to me.

See, my life is already complicated. A pastor’s world is full of appointments, interconnected relationships, original languages, writing projects, and working with volunteers to do things that paid employees wouldn’t want to do – to name just a few of the concerns of life.

I don’t want to have to wonder whether my computer will work in the morning. I don’t want to have to constantly be refreshing or approving or dealing with anti-virus software gunking up the process manager. I just want my stuff to work.

And that’s where Apple surpasses Microsoft in every way.When I start my computer, it works. It does what I need it to do – quickly and natively. It removes a huge worry for me.

Even my Bible software, which I complained about for a lot of reasons, only has issues because the programmers are so used to dealing with Microsoft that Apple’s Unix based system is like a foreign language to them. And they’re getting better – much better – with every release.

My computer geek friends always make fun of me because of my Mac-love. They don’t understand why someone who is intelligent and has computer skills would use a Mac. My answer is always, “Because I’d rather apply my intellect to doing things instead of constantly fixing my tools!” That’s what I was always doing with Windows machines. I was always reinstalling, defragging, virus-scanning, rebooting. I don’t want to have to do that. I want to sit down and type or design or surf. Then I want to shut the lid, and walk away.

I’m a Mac, and I love it.
