I am Outta Here – for the weekend

June 1, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

I am headed to Syracuse, New York, for the weekend for the Biblical Imagination Conference with the man, the legend, the awesomely bearded Michael Card. While I could never aspire to have a beard like his, Michael has long been one of my musical heroes. He combines teaching and art in a way that you… Read More »

Hillbilly Preachers, Homosexuals and Speaking Grace

May 31, 2012 By Erik DiVietro 1 Comment

A video of a North Carolina pastor was making the rounds of the internet recently. Pastor Charles L. Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church begins a diatribe on placing “lesbins, q-u-weers, and hom-o-sessuals” (that’s how he pronounces the words) in what amounts to concentration camps so they will die out. The video has over a… Read More »

A Question of Faith

May 31, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

Recently, I spoke on Luke 8:4-18 – what is known as “The Parable of the Sower.” The passage deals with the complex issue of why some people are “saved” and others are not, and as I expected there were a lot of questions about the nature of salvation. Particularly, someone asked about the meaning of… Read More »

How to NOT Sustain a Congregation

May 28, 2012 By Erik DiVietro 1 Comment

This week, I heard news of yet another local congregation in our region that has been going through difficult times – “falling apart” as it was put to me. Every time I hear about something like this, it grieves my heart. I wonder, often out loud, how this could happen and what Jesus must think.… Read More »

Worship Manifesto, post 3

May 25, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

Worship cannot be generated through mood lighting or great musicians because the source of worship must be the understanding (in part, 1 Corinthians 13:12) of God’s glory in Jesus Christ. Worship is not of this world; it is an attribute of resurrection. Only those raised in Christ can truly worship.

What Biblical Scholars Do

May 24, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

Peter Enns wrote a blog entry that I thought was worth linking to. A couple of months ago, Peter wrote a book on Genesis and the historical Adam that got the Christian blogosphere really buzzing. I wrote a couple things about it, just because I found the dialogue interesting. Anyway, here is the link to… Read More »

Worship Manifesto, post 2

May 24, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

Worship can be found in all of these things, to some extent, but worship’s core is the person of Jesus Christ. At the very core of worship must be the gospel – that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, come to redeem and restore all of creation.

Worship Manifesto, post 1

May 23, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

manifesto  (ˌmænɪˈfɛstəʊ) — n  , pl -tos , -toes a public declaration of intent, policy, aims, etc, as issued by apolitical party, government, or movement I am endlessly fascinated by the machinations of the modern church, in our varied attempts to justify our own existence. When we feel that sentiment is pulling toward social engagement, we become activists. When it is pulling toward leadership and programming, we become businessmen. When it pulls toward conversionism, we become evangelists. There… Read More »

And people wonder why I am somewhat critical of people using shock value to grow the church?

A Crazy, Connected World

May 15, 2012 By Erik DiVietro Leave a Comment

I was sitting at my computer, making stupid jokes on people’s status updates when I realized that I have a web of interlocking relationships that baffle my mind. FACT: I met our music director and his wife when they were in 11th grade at a Christian school and then reconnected with them twelve years later… Read More »
