Thus saith the LORD, Stand in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls.

But they said, We will not walk therein…We will not hearken.

Therefore hear, nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. Hear, O earth!

Behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. [Jeremiah 6:16-19]

The via de mar is an ancient Roman road that ran from Egypt through Palestine and into modern Syria. But when the Romans built their road, the path had already existed since before the Exodus! Old roads sometimes need to be reclaimed.

Just because the path to God is ancient, that does not mean it should not be contemporary. We honor the ancient by living it out in the modern.

How will you honor the ancient paths in our postmodern world?

God, you are the timeless Lord. Why do we always doubt your ways? Why do we try to make you in our image, generation after generation?
