There are only two kinds of people in the world:
- Those headed toward God
- Those headed away from Him.
We try to divide the world into denominations and religions, but in reality there are just two kinds of people.
God calls to ALL MEN, and salvation is sufficient for all, but not all will come to Him. Many – most – head away.
To those who head toward Him, God gives grace – “imputing righteousness” is the Biblical term found in Genesis, Romans and James. They come toward Him, encounter Jesus and are transformed by Jesus.
God does nothing to those headed away from them. With tears in His eyes, Jesus said, “I did not come to condemn the world. It was already condemned.” (John 3) Those who do not come to Jesus will, by definition walk away from God because Jesus is the truth, the life, and the way. (John 14)
You can be an extremely religious person and still be headed away from God because you are reliant on your religion or your observance of rites to clear your way to Him. You can be a complete atheist who does not believe in anything supernatural but who is curious and learning and moving toward Him.
